Battle of the sexes

Had wanted to continue my 郭襄 story, but hadn't got time to sit down for a long period of time. So that'll have to wait a while.

Here's a quote from an article from New York Times Magazine, "What's a Modern Girl to Do?", by Maureen Dowd:

Men, apparently, learn early to protect their eggshell egos from high-achieving women. The girls said they hid the fact that they went to Harvard from guys they met because it was the kiss of death. ''The H-bomb,'' they dubbed it. ''As soon as you say Harvard Business School . . . that's the end of the conversation,'' Ani Vartanian said. ''As soon as the guys say, 'Oh, I go to Harvard Business School,' all the girls start falling into them.''

I'm not a chauvinist or feminist or whatever, but I see truth in these words. Why are things like that? My theory is that in a relationship, the girl wants to feel protected, while the guy wants to be the protector. A guy from Harvard Business School is deemed to be smart and employable, so he is likely to be rich, influential, powerful, all the qualities that make him more suitable as a protector. A girl from Harvard, on the other hand, only serve to intimidate the guy... and burst his eggshell ego... (he is now incapable of protecting her!)

I think "Harvard Business School" is just too much of a stereotyped image for the efficient and ruthless kind of smartness - that's how it has the effect of a bomb. The power of stereotypes sneakily grows on people who are under the influence of the relevant culture. We probably don't think HBS is as much of a big deal as the Americans do, even though HBS has achieved somewhat of a world-wide presence.
